Scrubs & shoes that last a 12

Lots of hospitals assign scrub colors by role, so RTs might be in one color, nurses in another, and techs in a third. It changes from facility to facility, and some units (like the OR) hand out hospital scrubs.

• Ask your recruiter or manager what color your role wears before you buy a stack of new sets.
• Ask whether they want a certain shade (navy vs. “ceil blue” vs. royal), or a brand, or if they allow prints.
• Bring what you already own for orientation, then buy once you know the rules.

A good rule of thumb is 4 to 5 sets. Working three 12s a week, that gets you through a full week plus a spare, so laundry day can slip without trouble.

• Add 1 warm-up jacket or long-sleeve underscrub. Units can run cold.
• Keep 1 backup set in your car or locker for spills.
• Living in an RV or a place without a washer? Lean toward 5, so a laundromat trip once a week is enough.
• Mix and match: tops and pants in the same color from one brand stretch your sets further.

• Poly-cotton (most budget sets): breathable, cheap and sturdy, but it wrinkles and doesn’t stretch much.
• Stretch blends with spandex (most mid and premium lines): they move when you bend, lift or do compressions, and usually wick sweat and dry fast.
• Moisture-wicking helps on hot units. Stain-release or spill-repellent finishes help on messy ones.
• Read the care label. Dark colors can bleed the first few washes, so wash new sets alone.

• Think about what you carry: phone, pens, trauma shears, a penlight, tape, alcohol pads. Cargo pockets on the pants take weight off your top.
• A badge loop and a zip or deep phone pocket are worth more than a big pocket count.
• Brands size differently. Order early, try them on at home, and check the return policy before you cut tags.
• Tall or short? Look for petite, short or tall inseams. Cherokee and Grey’s Anatomy offer them on many styles.

• Most hospitals require closed-toe shoes, and many want them fluid-resistant and non-slip. Check your facility’s dress code.
• Break in new shoes before your first shift, not during it.
• Compression socks come in levels. 15-20 mmHg is a common everyday level, and 20-30 mmHg is firmer. If you have circulation or vein problems, ask your doctor which level is right for you.
